Computer won't work..... Please help....?

when i trun on the computer it loads onto my desktop with the icons and then it freezes. Mouse movse around when when i try to click on a icon nothing happens won;t let me do anything. tryed bring up ctrl-atl-del task manger but can't click on it. mouse won't let me click on anything. i have a windows xp.
