What kind of bird was it?

Hard to say for sure what species this is...I can only guess that it is some sort of vireo, gnatcatcher, or flycatcher. Is it actually feeding or just hanging out? See if you notice it catching bugs. Also, a mockingbird comes to mind..but they have white wing patches. A picture would be nice.
